Ape|Men: Zero

ape-men-zero-reviewUsually we try to stay in the current year, sometimes heading towards the ‘90s but we rarely step back into the decade I was born. It happens from time to time and one of those is today thanks to Ape|Men’s Zero. It was like taking something illegal and going on a trip that ended as odd as it started.

Right from the start the vocals in “Pictionary” were strange, very masculine and a little like a cousin of Right Said Fred – only less sexy. That had me hung up, but not enough that I failed to hear the music, which was just okay in this one. As we said hello to “Bye-Bye Devil,” I got used to the vocals and had to admit this one was better than the last. Here’s where that heavy ‘80s influence shines brightest though, right smack dab in the middle with “Up Is the New Bottom.” The beat of this one was undeniably the best, but overall the star of Zero was “Cash.” Last of the bunch, “Zero” takes awhile to get its engines revved and once it kicks in, the tone changes it up and when that happens, it transformed into something you’d likely hear on a video game.

The oddballs of the decade that brought us Boy George, this is what Ape|Men is likened to. If that’s what you’re into, then by all means, please take a chance to check out Zero. It’s right up your alley paved in New Wave and the occasional Cure poster.
