When bands come back to you for a review, it’s hard to remember the exact year you heard from them last. I rarely forget a band I’ve reviewed, but years escape me. So when I looked up the last time A Hero Falls put out something new, it was two years ago; Promises To Keep; Miles From Sleep. Then I was loving the acoustic gems, and the lyrics. This time around Basement Famous lacked one of those but had me smiling with another factor.
Fact – music painting a picture of a gang of children singing in horror film fashion, that’s no bueno. So “Seafaring” was not doing it for me and I wasn’t sure what to expect after that introduction to the record. Then quickly after that was over, “Directions” came in to save the day but didn’t overwhelm. Neither did “Pyramids.” The vocals there weren’t the strongest but now that I’ve pointed out all the things I didn’t like like I’m on an episode of Room Raiders in 2003, here are the things I did like…I can only hope each record has at least one line that pops out at me and “How can we keep on living, if we all stop dreaming,” was just that from “Truth Is Singular, It’s Versions Are Mistruths.” Never giving up on a dream is a big deal to me and for that reason – this song gets an A+. A close second was “Underneath” as it dealt with not being good enough to the people around you.
Personally, I can’t believe I’ve managed to keep this blog going this long and A Hero Falls is just a reminder that Golden Mixtape is just a piece of who I am. A Hero Falls is also a reminder that bands do take the time to write well thought lyrics that allow listeners to connect, rather than to just be entertained. While I missed having some acoustic gems to adore, Basement Famous was packed full of heartfelt words – so I’ll let it slide.
