defeat-the-low-a-nervous-smile-reviewAnother week has started and I have yet another new album for you to take in. Defeat The Low’s A Nervous Smile was reminded me of a band that I’m too old for but at the same time gave me a little reminder of a band I love to see any chance I can; Finch. Only there weren’t an excessive amount of lyrics about pictures and skillful screaming. It was more all around rock record.

Kicking things off was “Swordfish.” The lyrics were on point, but I’m not sure what an aquatic animal had to do with anything. I found a little musical solace in “Clarity” as “I may never understand” was a simple yet defining line of that song and to me as I laid on the couch all morning wondering about the point of my existence. When “Simple City” started I was for sure it was some sort of b-side of a Story So Far record but then it was clear it wasn’t a song about an ex being a whore and it found its own footing. While that was The Story So Far, “In Formation” was the one that made me think of Finch a bit. However, when it came down to my favorite, it was the not so ironically titled “Instrumental.” You have to love it because it is what it is.

If you’re into bands like Alive Like Me and Sleepwave, you will want to check out this record. Then when you definitely like what you hear, you’ll want to get tickets to their tour with Dance Gavin Dance and Secrets. You can get your copy of Defeat The Low’s A Nervous Smile, out now on Rise Records.
