After staggering to bed a little past 3am with dried tears on my cheeks, I awoke hours later with a new batch feeling not much better than before. Then I put on Small Parks’ Retracing and the water works went into overdrive. Damn you guys and your lyrics that actually resonate with my current state. Damn you and your indie punk ways that strike a chord with the little emo kid inside all of us.
The only song off this EP I didn’t like was “War Torn Poland.” Nothing about it stood out so we’ll just move along to the rest. Those who question every aspect of who they are on a daily basis will certainly attach their selves to “Five Dollar Words,” and the line “It’s no surprise to hear I’m insecure.” While those who chose to live an unconventional life will do nothing but sing their hearts out to every word when it comes to “Sorry, Dad.” It’s basically the summary of what it feels like to choose being in a band over having a traditional, planned out, mediocre life. Creative minds know what this one means all too well…
Then there was the pair that made the salty rivers break the floodgates. I listened to “Amalgamation” on repeat and I really shouldn’t have but it resonated too fucking much right now. It was like fate new to fuck with me and let this be the record I pressed play on today. Then of course there was its partner in crime, “Jailbird” and the one line that summed it all up, “I understand if I’m not worth your time.” When you want someone so bad and it’s looking like it’ll never happen – fuck that shit.
EPs don’t usually get this much out of me, so that has to say something about the content to be found on the latest from Small Parks. It’s that kind of music that has the punk mentality, but is packaged in an indie way and is riddled with emotions. I really enjoyed this one, despite it causing even more tears…So check out Retracing right this second.
