Why is it so hard to get back on the road once you’ve taken the tiniest detour? I have no maps to guide me to where I need to be, but at least I think I’m walking in the right direction. I meant to write about Austin Plaine’s self-titled debut yesterday but procrastination the night before got the best of me the night before. Now I’m just bummed I couldn’t tell you about this record that’ll make fans of Ryan Adams and Matt Nathanson swoon.
For a debut, this is a well oiled machine. Even if you’re not a fan of his singer/songwriter ways, you have to tip your hat to the professionalism found on Austin Plaine. The idea and struggle with the idea of home was loud and clear in the almost bookends, “Never Come Back Again” and “The Hell If I Go Home.” Mostly the songs sat on sadness, like “Only Human” and “Reckoning Plan.” There were very few moments of bliss, unless you count the music in “Houston.” All in all this was a record for the deep thinkers and those who like to keep things at a steady pace.
Although a day late, at least these words are being delivered to you now. So remember, if you’re a fan of Adams or Nathanson – get your butt in line and check out Austin Plaine’s self-titled debut, out now.
