This line has been erased more times than I’d like to admit. You’d think when it’s one of your favorite bands it’d be easier to put words down on modernized paper, but it’s not. You never really know if the latest album will live up to what came before, but you give it a go hoping it does. When it comes to Taking Back Sunday’s Happiness Is, it sounded great – there’s no denying the workmanship put into it. I just didn’t find true love in an instant.
There were just a couple songs that were able to stand next to the lead singles, which I’ve already declared as awesome when they dropped before the record. “Flicker Fade” and “Stood a Chance” continue to prove why they were ushered out first, but that’s not to say “Beat Up Car” and “They Don’t Have Any Friends” aren’t in line to be crowd favorites as well. When TBS slowed it down every so often, I listened because Adam’s voice is a delight, but it was only “We Were Younger” that managed to make me really, really take in what was being delivered. It’s easy to hear, it’s a task to listen.
The singles take the lead and have a few adversaries on their side, but all in all Taking Back Sunday’s was okay. One day out and I’m not doing mental flips over it – but it’s still early. Who knows how I’ll feel in a month’s time, or even weeks…I’m sure my opinions will be altered by the time I see them in San Diego. That’s what happened with We Are The In Crowd. Their latest record grew on me like mold in a hoarder’s house. If you’ve been a fan this long and endured all the drama, then you’ll continue to support and for the newbies out there, this one’s also for you if you like rock that’s not about the hoots and hollers but the musicianship. Happiness Is is out now on Hopeless Records.
