You’d think that after that earthquake in California this morning I would’ve gotten up early and started my day…Instead I went back to sleep, tossed and turned, and anxiously waited for the aftershocks. So I took advantage of working from home and slept in 30 minutes later than usual. That means I listened to Lee Preston’s The Gentleman a half hour later than I wanted to. This record is better suited for my mom rather than myself as it’s got this vintage sound to it, which is weird because he’s not an older gentleman himself.
Lee’s are that of a late night bar act, aged due to experience but still not perfect. You can hear that all too well in “The City” and “Taste of Salt.” If you had to pick a favorite on this record you’d sit somewhere between the country-like ways of “Dear Adalaide” and “The Gentleman.” After some hard debating, it’d be settled – the title track is the go-to. It may remind you not of a bar, but of a summer day; a Fourth of July BBQ in the park kind of song if you will.
While I continue to worry the “big one” is right around the corner, I’ll leave you with this…Lee Preston, an artist who writes in a way that brings an alternative take to country in a way that makes it a more abrasive form of Americana. If that’s how you like your music served, check out The Gentleman out March 20th.
