Matt-Golaboff-A-Collision-Written-UnderCircumstance-reviewIt’s freezing and quiet, the sound of one car every so often breaks my train of thought as I try to compose what I want to say about the last record to invade my musical space. Matt Golaboff’s A Collision Written Under Circumstance could be likened to a record put out by someone who’d tried out for Idol or The Voice. He’s not someone who would’ve taken home the ultimate win because there’s room for improvement, but he would’ve made it past the first couple rounds thanks to his heart and overall emotional turmoil – audiences eat that up.

Alas Matt isn’t a reality show reject, he’s a young fellow from Maryland with a record that’s got more emotions than a teenage slumber party. While his voice strained once in awhile, it didn’t hurt the record too much. Since most songs relied on the melancholy feel, it worked for songs like “Anniversary,” which if you’re looking to surprise your loved one with a song – skip this one. It’s not a celebratory song. but one of sad recollections. The sadness continued with “Pain Pain” and “Mind Games.” Both the music and the vocals of each were like Eeyore strapped on a guitar and gave music a try. The only song to break away a bit was “Trigger.” Okay, the subject matter wasn’t looking on the bright side, but there was something pretty about the delivery.

If you had to file Matt Golaboff, you could place him in the singer songwriter nook but then note his insight to gloom is on point. If you’re into music that’s somewhere between the acts you see on the reality regular and the stages of coffee shops, this record could be for you. Or if you just like to sing along to sad songs, you know what they say – misery loves company. A Collision Written Under Circumstance is out now.
