the-lonely-biscuits-things-sure-have-changed-reviewIt’s been almost five years since I graduated college. This would be great if I’d done anything with my life since then. Instead it’s a little sad and it’s not helping that I’m up past midnight relishing in an album that’s perfect for kids trying to find their way in a world filled with dorm parties and dreadful 8am classes. I’m talking about The Lonely Biscuits and their album, Things Sure Have Changed. It’s the soundtrack to college life and not because it’s full of things stolen from Philosophy 101, but because it’s got this fresh sound that’s too cool for high school but not boring enough to be for true adults. You know the types, stuffy folks with real jobs – what I should be at this age.

No lie, I wrote down “LFO” when “Casual Vibes” began. Those enrolled at a university today have no idea what that means, but basically that light hip hop sound that sounds more beach boardwalk than inner city, that’s it. The rhymes were never aggressive and I was a fan of that. Think Shwayze and poppier Gym Class Heroes. That one was good, but it was “Pool Day” that made me want to skip (my imaginary) math class. It was relaxed to a point, but picked up at just the right moments. While it had the same elements as the rest of Things Sure Have Changed, it had its own thing going on as a whole to me. The middle of the record played like studying music, it was cool and calm and not disruptive; great “let’s hope our RA’s out so we can do…uh…study, yeah study” music.

If you’re in college and you’re not listening to The Lonely Biscuits, you’re clearly not taking advantage of the fact that your campus’ pub has mtvU. Get out of your room, explore and discover this band if you haven’t already because you need to have a soundtrack to your college days. Mine includes too much Fall Out Boy, so be a little hipper than me and check out Things Sure Have Changed, out October 29th.
