Currently I’m sitting between a mother and an elderly couple at the free clinic. It’s likely I’ll find myself with a prescription for muscle relaxers, but not a clear diagnosis. While I may not find out what’s truly wrong with my back, it was crystal when it came to how I felt about The Elephant In The Room’s The Collective & The Individual. The results are not good.
There was something a little 30 Seconds to Mars about The Elephant In The Room. It wasn’t to the point where I was like, oh hey this is Jared Leto isn’t it? It was just that there was a lot of drama within the whole make up of songs like “Sky People” and “Left In The Dark.” So if you’re into that, that’s great but if not you won’t want to not dive too much into those ones. For others, I’d prescribe the universal sounding “Actions Speak Louder Than Words.” Universal not only due to the title, but because it sounds like one of those radio songs that grabs your attention; you learn it and you either like it or sing along because it’s just there. There were a few I just passed on altogether but I’ll just focus on the odd one I can’t stop thinking about, “Neither Here Nor There.” It threw me off for a second thanks to its 311-like start that quickly transformed into a progressive rock track.
Now I’m home and on muscle relaxers (told you), and finishing up my time with The Elephant In The Room. Well crafted, but not for me specifically. This album’s for those who like their rock not only well oiled and full of drama and a lot of attention to detail musically speaking. The Collective & The Individual is out October 29th but you can get in the holiday spirit and listen to their first single, “Ghosts,” on Alternative Press.
