the-insurrectionists-roundpeg-squarehole-reviewLast night my large body had to run up Highland in Hollywood to make sure I didn’t miss the exact subway that’d get me to my scheduled cab on time. All I have to say is thank you cab service for driving away and leaving me to walk close to 1am in Van Nuys by myself. Luckily I lived to write you today about The Insurrectionists’ RoundPeg/SqaureHole. We met this band last year and it seems like they haven’t strayed from their 90’s alternative sound, only grew with it.

A lot of songs had me thinking they alluded to other things. Was “Atlas Shrugged” about the book, was “Catfish Days” an ode to that (obviously fake) MTV show? I don’t know, but “Atlas” did make a reference to a deity. All I do know that that song was still shrouded in 90’s flannel glory. As was “Life Goes On,” which won my ultimate seal of approval with its anger issues,  so much so you’d think it’d need those management classes. Then there was a very Foo Fighter’s like jam called “September.” It’s not one of those Foo songs that get played out on stations like KROQ, but did have some similar overall elements; not a Billboard contender, but a definite winner. Lastly, I loved that they paid homage to their last release with “Swan Song” by naming it so.

All in all The Insurrectionists have grown since the last time we crossed paths while still retaining the same. Does that make sense? Yes, it means they’ve fined tuned their talents. If you’re a fan of alt-rock and need a new band to obsess over, check out RoundPeg/SqaureHole out now.
