A fire erupted near my hometown yesterday, and I wasn’t mentally here or there to be able to listen to anything. I sat in the living room worried as fuck that the place I’d grown up would be no more. Thankfully the flames didn’t make my family homeless and today I’m better and ready to take on Tri-State’s self-titled. This indie rock record reminded me a little of the music that could’ve been in the My Girl sequel; peace, love and rock that wasn’t too harsh. Some songs were a little too easygoing, while some did just the trick and would be Veda approved.
As I listened to “Muddlin’ Thru” I felt like I was stuck in some sort of musical mud. The track trudged on and never took off. The same could be said of “Back Before” as well. The songs I’d like to pass on to you for consideration are “Hawk in the Fog” and “Search Party.” “Hawk” told a story I was interested in learning. Who was this Jessica and why was I so concerned about her? Something about the indie drum march throughout made the song worthwhile. Then there was “Search Party,” that one’s the most My Girl 2. I imagine Veda and her uncle listening to it as they drive through Topanga Canyon. It’s got a light, airy feel; perfect for a beautiful day connecting with the outside world.
Not every track was a winner in my book, but I’d put money on a few when it comes to this indie rock record. If you fancy the sounds of Spoon and The New Pornographers, then you should take the time and get into Tri-State. Their latest Tri-State is out now, so check it and have a great weekend.
