This is the first time in a long time that I’ve written outside of the confines of my apartment. Today finds me in line for New Girl’s PayleyFest out in Beverly Hills. There’s a studious girl with a back straighter than Mitt Romney, and another who’s in prom attire. I was unaware this was a formal affair. She’s more fit to dance her heart out to Tilian Pearson’s Material Me, than for what this night has in store. Her sequined mini was made for the electro pop that Material Me is filled with.
Tilian, best known for fronting Dance Gavin Dance, would do well sharing a bill with the likes of Owl City. Their electronic inspired pop would mesh well flawlessly. Owl City would sing his Top 40 mainstays, while Tilian would dish out “Now or Never” and “Chemicals.” Another comparison came with “Flutter.” This one was a bit more indie than pop and I felt that if I ever got into that Imagine Dragons band, this track would sound like something on they’d put out.
Material Me really takes on its own identity with a few tracks towards the end. “Ghost” and “Feel It Again” are dance parties meant for Logo commercials. The cream of the crop was “Favor” though. Every time I let the record play again as a questioned sequined chick’s motives, “Favor” was the one my ears held a “10” for. Years ago I fell for the Alice in Wonderland soundtrack (Tim Burton’s) and this track could’ve sat happily on that album as it was lucid with a touch of whimsy.
The line is getting longer, but my time with Tilian Pearson’s Material Me is getting shorter. Usually I just glide past any record like this, for it’s too fun for my taste, but his one had enough tracks to keep my attentions far enough from the sequin queen. Of you like Owl City or GOLDHOUSE, then you’re likely going to be into Tilian Pearson’s Material Me, out March 19th on Vital Records through IndieGoGo.
