Golden Mixtape

Another Friday night in, watching wedding shows on TLC and getting rid of the fuzz balls on my cardigans. I’m a wild one at 25, but alas I am also a socially inept individual that you’d likely find scrapbooking instead of binge drinking. Scrapbooks, oh I tried that route before. Okay one time because I had a kit, but that’s the name of The Winter Passing’s new EP, so I thought I’d toss it in there. The Winter Passing is a young band from Ireland who’ve put together Scrapbook; an album with a laid back persona.

Scrapbook is like a pop punk record set to lukewarm, I guess that’s why they consider their selves indie punk. “Crooks” was as wild as the record got. The song was actually one of the better ones too. If it means what I think it means, and is about not being able to relate to anyone you grew up with…Then I’m onboard with “Crooks” message. If it means something else, The Winter Passing, hit me up. I’d like to know. Another track that I’d give a high five to would be “Gold Blend Part 1” for its relaxed delivery. It wasn’t so chill that it was a folk track. It just showcased every piece of the band perfectly; female and male vocals along with the instrumentation.

“Feels Like” was one I wasn’t feeling. It felt like the weakest link on Scrapbook. Well dang, with this being an EP, I feel like I have to mention the last song. “1990” was the Simple Plan, “sorry I’m not who you want me to be dad” sentimental song. Only it didn’t sound anything like my third favorite thing about Canada (Degrassi and Bieber fight for one and two). It was more a boy with his heart on his guitar.

The Winter Passing’s Scrapbook is a record to check out if you’re into pop punk that’s less intense than the current scene, and are into bands like Pity Sex and Brave Bird.  Scrapbook is out March 8^th, so check it out and support your local Irish scene…even if you’re not Irish, not in the least.
