Golden Mixtape

These past few months have been long, but I’ve seen my shadow.  When Still the Sky’s Limit’s 5-track EP, Legacy, dropped into my inbox, I knew automatically where my hibernation would end, and when the addition to my digital heirloom would begin again.

With the sun shining, I see things in a better light – literally. Yet, I am also listening to “Someone Know I Passed,” the first track off of Legacy. Coupled with interesting lyrics and an energetic sound, I feel completely optimistic about my own misgivings with my current situation. Certain rhythms in this track remind me slightly of The Used song, “Sold My Soul.” Lead vocalist, John Barthelmass sings, “It’s never over if we don’t forget…wait here in these memories that never let us down.” It’s completely refreshing to return to nostalgia, while everyone else is singing for us to turn away. If we stop to think our pasts, they are fuel for the future.

The mastering of this EP (Kevin Bartley) is well done, as each song leads seamlessly into another. “Quite Possibly, “ is almost an extension of “Someone Know I Passed,” yet the vibe is entirely different.  It’s a bit more edgy – angry, but not so much so that it sounds like it should belong on a different record entirely. If I could compare sound to taste, I would say it makes coffee seem sweet.

Although “Wake” is another great alternative rock track, “Risk,” is more notable because of its abrupt shift in momentum. This is the “slow-jam” song that is reminiscent of Bert McCracken’s vocal style, paired with a People in Planes backdrop. It’s somber, yet, the intensity of the melodies make the song a complete success. I dare say that it’s thought provoking, and as it asks the listener to focus on every element– to simply listen.

I have set personal goals for the day so that I am not wasting away and drowning in the sunlight and music. So this where this review ends, but I leave seeing bigger things for Still the Sky’s Limit, as their passion and energy truly lend to their musical Legacy.
