Sometimes you don’t know where to start, but that’s no excuse to not see things through. That’s how I felt when listening to Diamond Youth’s Orange. I was unsure of where to even begin this review because I wasn’t connecting with the music. It didn’t bring about a personal anecdote, anything for that matter. It was just music streaming from my laptop to my ears, my hands jotting down the first things that came to mind and the end result being a rock album that left me clueless.
I worked in radio promotion for two years as a sales consultant. I won’t go into detail because my time there was hell on earth, but I can say I walked away able to classify which stations an artist would be fit for. So listening to Orange, I decided that they were definitely AC Rock. Rock that’s not too crazy that a mom would switch it off, but more the kind of rock that’s like Muse; universally enjoyed by a variety of people because it’s neither here nor there. That thought came to mind as soon as their single “Cannonball” finished and “Separation” began.
Those two made me categorize Diamond Youth, but it was another pair that stood out as the best representations of goodness that Orange had to offer. “Come Down” had a laidback vibe to it thanks to the vocals not being too forceful. It was a melodic musical ride the whole way through. On the other side was “Orange.” With that song I found the root of Diamond Youth’s rock laid in the foundation of the heavier intro.
I said I wasn’t too sure about Diamond Youth’s Orange, but a few paragraphs later I spilled something out onto this digital piece of paper for you to read, so I guess they were able to provoke something in me. Orange is out now, so check it out if you like your rock with a side of maturity.
