Currently experiencing a sugar high as I consumed the entire box of Starbursts, I told myself that I’d only have few so they’d last. I lied. My mind is hyper as the music I’m listening to is not. American Wolf’s Myriad isn’t what you want after a sweets binge, due to its chilled mode. It’s as if Silversun Pickups had the most well behaved kid ever. It’s rarely out of control and is very soft spoken.
I first listened to “A Dark Matter” on the subway the other day and thought that it was because only my left earbud works that I couldn’t pick up on the vocals. Today with my laptop, I have come to realize that it’s just a quite song where the music overpowers the words. Unlike Silversun Pickups, American Wolf have a pretty steady pace that doesn’t go off course too often. Songs like “Open Me” and “Mother” appear to be a Dali put to song. They are a bit obscure, but have a whimsical approach to them. Again, all the songs are pretty laid back, minus “Letting You Out” that breaks American Wolf’s shell a bit with a breakdown.
The only drawback of Myriad for those who like things short and sweet, is that the songs do run long. So unless you have a lot of time to dedicate to music, or a long drive that needs a soundtrack, this album may not be for you. I think that’s why I gravitated towards “The Secret to Passing Through,” because while it might have the longest title, it’s the shortest track of the bunch.
The sugar is wearing off as I come to the end of this review, thank goodness. Anyways, if you’re into bands that fall somewhere in between Silversun Pickups and Cirva Survive, and have a yearning for long drawn out musical landscapes, then American Wolf’s Myriad is just the fit for you as we ring in the New Year. Pre-order it now and get it when it drops on January 22nd.
