Before I start every day I lay under the blankets with my iPod Touch and go through Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and all the other sites to see what I missed while dreaming about Bill Hader. An article happened to catch my eyes on Alter The Press about their “most anticipated albums” of 2013 because it was mostly pop rock records with female leads. Could this be the year that ladies reign supreme? Staples Paramore are of course number one on many lists, and then there’s We Are The In Crowd and Tonight Alive. That thought stayed with me as I stumbled out of bed and put on A Hero Falls’ Promises To Keep; Miles From Sleep, which happens to also be a female led pop rock band. Coincidence? I think not.
What’s the saying, so nice you had to have it twice? Something like that. Well that was the case with Promises To Keep; Miles From Sleep. Both songs that caught my attention on the record happened to have acoustic versions later on. “Am I Ready?” told the story of growing up and/or being in a band and looking at the road that lies ahead and doubting one’s self. Because of the tales told, the acoustic version seemed more fitting and placed first ahead of the other. The other track was “Moving On.” This one happened to be the opposite. I thought the acoustic was good, but the other was the strongest vocally for me on the entire record.
Oddballs on a record are like those people in your family; you love them, but aren’t sure why. “Impressionable Youth” was weird when it started and that feeling of quirky didn’t stop when it really got into it, but low and behold it was probably my favorite. Why? Can’t really tell you why I liked that indie like take on this pop rock record. Then there was “From Our Eyes (8-bit).” Clearly video game inspired and awesome for those who think the music in classic NES games are top notch.
A Hero Falls’ Promises To Keep; Miles From Sleep was a good backdrop for my morning and fitting to listen to after reading about so many female led pop rock bands being anticipated. Let’s hope people waiting for Tonight Alive’s new record can make some room for A Hero Falls in their iTunes too, because if you’re a fan of that Aussie band, then you’ll like Promises To Keep; Miles From Sleep.
