Most people change after high school because they grow up, ditch a certain style or adopt a new idea for what it means to be them. Then 10 years later, there comes a day when they get a reunion invitation and memories come rushing back; good and back. The movie 10 Years, starring (my future husband) Channing Tatum, Rosario Dawson, Justin Long and many others, is an honest look at a reunion among a group of friends, classmates and once enemies. It’s not a high budget film with a wacky plot, it’s real and that comes across in not only the stories of these characters, but the music you can find on the 10 Years Soundtrack.

Every soundtrack is essentially a mixtape (and we love that of course). It’s a collection of songs that showcase the essence of the film, and for 10 Years, that vibe is nostalgic and human. These aren’t overproduced tracks by Lady Gaga, they’re simple with heart…Minus a couple like “Oh Shit” by The Pharcyde, which is a Hip Hop track that was needed for the best side story of the movie. All I can say is, G-Money and Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza shine and deserve something for their contribution to many laughs.

If we were to look at this soundtrack as a class, honors would go to “Bad Bad Love” by Alexander. It was a perfect fit for the opening as it was one of those “hey this is definitely a montage track” tracks. Joe Purdy’s “Don’t Be Sad” might remind listeners of The Voice’s Tony Lucca because of the soul the vocals possess.

It’s actually one of the stars of the film, Oscar Isaac, who gives the soundtrack’s biggest highlights, “You Ain’t Goin Nowhere” and “Never Had.” I think John Mayer is a phenomenal artist and respect his talents, but I have to say Oscar is like an understandable Mayer. You know Mayer can kind of mumble at times…I can’t say why “Never Had” is amazing in the movie, because that’ll give a good part away, but if you listen to the lyrics (which you should always do!), you will want Oscar and/or his character Reeves by your side.

If you want a mix of male singer songwriters with a Hip Hop and soul tossed in the middle, then the 10 Years Soundtrack is for you. Fans of Will Hoge, Ernie Halter and of course, John Mayer will find and discover a lot of great artists on this soundtrack, so go check it out and relive some good high school memories.
