As little girls, we live in a world of fairytales and the idea that prince charming is just around the corner. As teenagers, romantic comedies are the game plan for what adulthood will be like; a cool job in New York, Ryan Reynolds and getting married after a whirlwind of ups and downs. Then you hit 25 and are stuck staring at a message you’ve written to a guy you like, and hitting send is suddenly causing panic attacks, like it will detonate an atomic bomb or something. But alas, those Disneyesque stories are stuck in the back of your mind and albums like Rachel Brown’s Building Castles is in the background as you sit and contemplate relationships and everything they encompass, the highs and the lows.
Rachel Brown’s voice has a vulnerability to it, yet is as comforting as your favorite sweater on a cold day, much like a great relationship. “On Your Side” showcases her voices best attributes as it tells the tale of someone who is in it for the long haul. “Bumblebee” is another one that will get even the coldest hearted person feeling all giddy. It not only has a cute title, but the pace and delivery is as adorable as well. Its simplistic lyrics and easy going style are going to spawn a lot of YouTube covers, that’s my prediction.
On the flipside of the love idea is “Falling in Love Backwards.” This song is the total opposite of all the rest and might be the prettiest way to ever hear that it’s over. So if you’re looking to break up with someone, I suggest you use this track.
Not every girl will get their storybook romance, I’m proof of that, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream, right? And while there’s a breakup song on Building Castles, for the most part, Rachel Brown demonstrates the concept of love in a variety of ways well. You’d most likely hear Brown’s music on Vh1 alongside the likes of Ingrid Michaelson and Sara Barielles. So if you’re into those strong female singers with a whole lot of emotion in their music, Rachel Brown’s Building Castles is for you. It’s out September 18th, so get it when you can!
