After a day of exploring new parts of LA, at least places the bus would take me, I ended at my favorite spot in the entire city; Hollywood & Highland. Most people who inhabit this city hate the tourist destination because it’s busy, Regular Joes run around as characters like Elmo and Bumblebee…poorly and the next “Snoop Dogg” pushes his CDs in your face. So why love it?
I love seeing people from all over the world connecting over the fantasy of what Hollywood’s supposed to be. People have this idea of glamorous, dramatic lifestyles. So the record I had to review here had to fit the picture of what a tourist feels Hollywood is like. ..Hence The Scarlet Ending’s The Things You Used To Own.
“My War” is like a theatrical version of Vanessa Carlton and her ivory tactics. It’s pop music with a lot more drama and pizazz. No, it isn’t showtunes, more like a sexy cabaret at times. Times like “The Skeleton.”
While you can’t catch a Broadway show at Hollywood and Highland, “The Dark Side” is good enough. When listening, you can hear the expressions in the vocals. She acts out the words through song, creating lively scenes for the audience through the speakers.
If The Scarlet Ending ever wanted to showcase their antics on the sidewalks paved with stars, they’d fit in with the essence Hollywood has, according to tourists that is. Their glamorous, drama filled pop is also a perfect fit for fans of Vermillion Lies and Anorexic Beauty Queen, so if you like either of those bands, make sure to get The Things You Used To Own.
