The sun outside is an invitation to enjoy all nature has to offer. I declined the bright side because The Demos are all the cheer I need as I stay locked inside, for one doesn’t have to sweat up a storm to enjoy their day. Music can be enough, and it smells a lot better afterward too. So I continued to pass a random Tuesday with two tracks on repeat by The Demos. Only two, but why? Well they’re a preview of what’s to come off their album Paramount Clouds when it shifts in this fall.
“Primitive” is the lead single of the pair that landed in my actual mailbox. Its indie pop was sounded like the décor in a young couple’s apartment in artsy part of any metropolitan city; wide eyed, but not blind to reality. The music sounds positive as can be, but with lyrics like “I’m gonna die someday,” you can see a dark side to this track. In the end, you’re left wondering what was so primitive…
Then “Neon” comes on with the same stylistic charm as “Primitive,” but this time you can hear a vocal resemblance to Ben Gibbard. So here the sadness that causes a dynamic between the music and the tone doesn’t come from the lyrics as it did with “Primitive,” but from the instrument known as the human voice.
The balance act between happy and somber come across in each track well, much like the bright day outside and the decision to bask in the dark of apartment walls. When it boils down to it though, both have a sense of carefree elegance that made me dance around the kitchen while serving myself a piece of funfetti cake, and with that I can’t wait to hear what other tracks are being bred by The Demos for Paramount Clouds, out this Fall.
