Thought of writing a book this week as Certain People I Know’s self-titled LP played on…and on. Yes, it was quite the listening party I had as Michael Phelps swam to be the official greatest and a little girl named Gabby won all of our hearts. Then there’s me and Certain People I Know. We weren’t familiar with one another when this began and it took a long time before I was able to put pen to paper to even construct what I was going to say about them…And I want to write a book?
There are two singers in this band, a guy and a girl. The guy is so soft with his words, but for once I’m not going to pull the Ben Gibbard card. This guy was more like a shy dude who wants the girl but can’t get the balls to speak up, so he writes a song about it. His female counterpart, more of an early 90’s Liz Phair. Put them together with an indie style that’s heavy on guitar, and you have an album that’d do well with Dowsing and Brave Bird fans.
“Neverlasting” starts with this nothing short of an eerie feel, but once that pans out you get this college alt. sound that grows on you after a handful of times. “NYE” was the song that initially inspired the personal literary thoughts. At first because my mind wandered because the song failed to keep attentions, but there was something about it that made me go back to start and give it another chance. It ended up being a song you’d play in a low budget Sundance movie montage.
Winding down to the end, “How Was The Show (Politics)” was the one song that truly made my ears perk up. It was the simplicity of it that caused an appreciation. The words were telling of emotion and the delicate arrangement made it more noticeable.
The jury’s out on whether or not I should write a book, but they reported back on Certain People I Know and the verdict is that if you like music that falls under “indie rock” or like bands that would’ve been on CMJ’s chart in 1994, then this band’s self-titled is for you. It’s out August 7th on Count Your Lucky Stars Records, so enjoy!
