Why get a boyfriend when you can date music? This is what loner girls with blogs tell their selves…trust me. But this time it’s not to live in a world of denial that you’re the “forever alone” meme, it’s really because yet again California’s Back Pocket Memory has landed in my inbox with an album that’s been on repeat most of this Monday afternoon as Anderson’s on mute. Note, if I’m muting my silver fox for your album, it must be a good one.

Back Pocket Memory’s self-titled will drop in September, but until then altpress.com will have the star of the EP, “The Prisoner.” If this song asked me to go steady, I’d quickly say “fuck yeah!” When a song like this leads the pack, it’s hard to move on. From the press of play, the music is the driving force that makes you stay, and once the vocals start…knees will melt. Yes, if you haven’t heard of this band before, prepare to develop a vocal crush on BPM’s Chris. He’s like a baby Brandon Boyd, nuff’ said.

“The Prisoner” might be a first pick for a real relationship, but before you settle down, you have to date some others to get a feel for what’s out there. “Hide and Seek” is upbeat, and had me singing along, but at the end, I needed to see who else was there. “Catapult” was the same way, but this time I was doing that thing where you sing along…even if you don’t know the words because you just want to connect to something that has striking lyrics.

Speaking of, the imagery of “Daylight” with lines like “lifeless on a stage like a puppet missing strings” makes it a strong contender for second place. Lastly, “What Have You Done” ends the EP and like many dates, you’re left wondering what he would be like in bed…well in this case; “in bed” translates to “live.” Lucky for me I live in California and can see BPM. If that job pulls through, but that’s another story for another day.

This EP won’t take you longer than 20 minutes to get through. That’s enough time for me to set up an eHarmony profile…but again, why? Back Pocket Memory’s Back Pocket Memory is enough for now. So if you’re into bands like Currents and Culprit, and have yet to let BPM in your lives, check them and all they have to offer out.
