Ourlives: Out of Place

Learning their names or where they’re from would require Rosetta Stone, but to listen to Ourlives Out of Place, one only needs a set of ears. Reykjavik, Iceland born, Ourlives is ready to take the show on the road and branch out to the US market with an EP that’s harmonious, melancholy pop rock.

A full hand deep, Ourlives presents the “Out of Place” first and all I could think was, “this is definitely VH1 sounding.” It’s mature skin encompasses the mindset of someone so lost with a statement most everyone forces their self to believe every day, I’ll “figure it out some day.” Fans of The Decemberists and Death Cab For Cutie should be interested in Ourlives and the whole EP, especially “Anything Can Happen Now.”

And while I found the songs a little too relaxing for my taste, “Nuna” stood out as the one that might sway a more general crowd into their record, instead of a niche audience. It never reached the climax I expected, but when it was through it got played out as the stand out on Out of Place.  When the record wound down, “We Lost The Race” talked of a paradise which was a fitting note because the EP played like a slow motion trip through a lush forest.

Ourlives managed to create an album that showcased a pleasing unity between its members that will actually cause Out of Place to find a place in the US. If they aim for the right places that it.
