This morning I felt like I was in high school again getting excited over KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, so I spent a good chunk of the AM listening and trying to win tickets. Then when it was the hour to win night 2 AKA the “may as well be fucking Coachella” night,” I turned that shit down and listened to Ivadell’s Flow. It was somber rock that made me a bit sleepy but out of three tracks I did find out piece of hope.
The record starts off on a low note. “For Love of Will” speaks loudly to those who enjoy their indie with a melancholy aura. Trudging on to “Breaking Light” you encounter a song where the musical elements were tip top but they didn’t quite connect with the vocals to me. It was like they were on different pages of an anthology; telling contrasting tales. For me we did end on a good note with “Flickering.” This is the one where I actually felt some sort of connection. It didn’t feel like a chore to listen to, but rather a good time. I think because everything aligned and it had a bit more energy than the rest.
It wasn’t a homerun but it wasn’t a complete foul. If you’re a fan of bands like O’Brother and Quicksand, then I highly recommend you listen to Ivadell because it’s likely you’ll be more a fan than me. You can get Flow, out now on Broken Circles, and while you do that I’m going to endure the torture of listening to KROQ play the same five bands to try and win some tickets.
