It’s Friday and I’m sitting here avoiding packing for a quick trip up north to see New Found Glory by giving a new pop punk band a listen. La Bella Charade’s Born to Crawl won’t be replacing any of my favorite NFG records anytime soon but I do appreciate the bookends of the record.
When “Back Roads” first started I wasn’t a fan. The odd whisper threw me off but as it picked up so did my spirits and interest in the song. It’s always about finding that line to connect to and I found it right away with this one, “friends have all abandoned me and left me for dead…” I feel you bros. After that were a few splashes of pop punk that didn’t quite hit the mark. “Fires” and “Second Chances” were okay, but I felt they needed a boost of confidence. As for the title track, “Born to Crawl” was vocally and musically what I would’ve liked to hear the entire record – well variations of.
Now that this is wrapping up, I suppose I’ll start packing. Before I go away for the weekend and pretend reality isn’t waiting to kick my ass when I return I have to say that if you’re a fan of music that goes for pop punk then you might want to give these guys a chance and see where they go from there. La Bella Charade’s Born to Crawl is out now.
