Sadly I’m still employed by the asshole, but at least I get to finish up some work, do a little me time and then head out in the blazing California heat to see Limp Bizkit tonight – alone. Yes, I’m rollin’ solo to this because that’s how hermits do. Anyways, in between having to tell a grown man to click a link and emailing rappers I had the indie rock sounds of Caytana’s Nervous Like Me as the background noise to my morning. All I could do was imagine I was in a scene of Reality Bites as it played on.
I’m Winona Ryder and my boss is killing me with his idiotic email responses. As that scene plays out “Serious Things Are Stupid” is so relevant. It’s about being alone and somebody not changing their ways. Then I couldn’t help but flashback to before I had this hell on earth gig and that’s where “Black Hills” comes in – “Take me back to those old days, I was fine with my old ways.” Those capture my time right now, but other than that you get a more rocking feel with “Scott Get The Van, I’m Moving” and then are swept under a spell with “Hot Dad Calendar” and “Busy Brain.”
My reality still bites, but this record doesn’t – that’s especially true if you’re a fan of Lemuria and Waxahatchee. Cayetana capture this raw human experience and put it to music that’s a little demure at times, but gets the point across. If you’re a fan of that indie rock that sounds like something Janeane Garofalo’s Vickie Miner would’ve listened to as she jotted down her latest one night stand, then Nervous Like Me is right up your alley. It’s out now on Tiny Engines, so check it.
