Yesterday was a pain from the start but then it got real and better, and today my distractions are all due to my mind just wandering about aimlessly for no reason at all. Now I’m trying to focus and get to the task (one of many) at hand. Listening to Stargroves’ self-titled album which features a lot of musical elements true musicians will enjoy, as well as s couple songs from one of the best young actors in the game.
Let’s start with what I didn’t like to get that out of the way – the end of the record just fell off for me. I wasn’t feeling “Da Da Da Da” or “Star Elf” as much as I did ones from earlier on. Songs like the ones that featured Zombieland’s Abigail Breslin. Both “Westfjords” and “Within Me A Lunatic Sings” were beautiful assets to the record. “Lunatic” edging out the other just a bit thanks to what sounded like the Disneyland parade inserted here and there. The two I really dug though were the sweet ways of “Hafnarfjörður” and “Half Awake In Reykjavik,” which reminded me a bit of Hellogoodbye in between their fun and hipster phase.
All in all Stargrove’s record as a good time wrapped in an indie pop shell. Sometimes the songs played on a little too long, but when it was ones like “A Good Child Sings A Good Song,” you just got lost and enjoyed the ride. If you’re into bands like the later Hellogoodbye and Kenny Vasoli when he’s not too rocking, then you’ll dig Stargroves, out now.
