Woke up early to get shit done, then took a nap to relax – woke up to a panic attack. As my heart and mind races I’m scrabbling to find the words to tell you how I feel about Late Bloomer’s Things Change. There was only one song that really, really won me over while the rest played like a cornucopia; each offering something different.
Let’s start with the variety and then I’ll tell you the one I really, really liked. You got your indie with “Use Your Words,” with “No Mistakes” I thought it was an ode to ‘60s pop but then it quickly turned a little gritty and finally you can’t escape the unexpected full rock that came from “Black Patches.” All from Late Bloomer, all sounding like three different bands completely. While the title track was okay and a tale of stubborn mentalities, my ears and heart really gravitated towards “Dr. Abernathy.” It sounded like a track looking to be added to the Reality Bites soundtrack. It’s 20 years too late but still doing it’s thing on this record.
The attack has simmered down a bit as these words come to an end. If you like bands like Ovlov (hey, remember them from yesterday?) and Pity Sex then you’re going to be all up on Late Bloomer. So make sure to check out their latest, Things Change, out now.
