Daniel J. W!shington: Qontaqt

daniel-j-washington-Qontaqt-reviewCollege wasn’t typical for me. I didn’t go out or experience anything that crazy, but it was a time for musical discovery – which was totally fine for me. I only bring that up because that’s the audience I think of when I listened to Daniel J. W!shington’s Qontaqt. It wasn’t the norm, and at that age that’s exactly what you’re looking for. You want something obscure that might make people question your sanity, right?

Daniel’s music does just that. Not because it’s this over the top weird, but because it’s really unlike a lot of what you’d head on mainstream radio. It’s not “Fancy,” or “Happy.” It’s hip hop with a weird twist. Like if you took it into a kitchen and added a dash of indie and then boiled it for a bit – this is what you’d get. For the most part this record was good. I only scoffed at “Forced Around A Corner” and “Qalqulated.” No matter how many listens, those two just garnered a big “NO” from me each time. Unlike “Get Lost,” which kicked off the record and only got better with each spin. All three were no match for the end of the album. “I Tried” was a favorite from the second it started and was the most connectable. That and “Newspaper Rock” are definitely the stand outs.

If you’re a college kid looking for that artist who’s two blocks down from the box, then you’ll want to check out Daniel J. W!shington. I don’t think it’s dumb to assume this guy would be in the company of artists who’ve been on MTVu and collected Woodies from said channel. So if you like your hip hop strange then check out Qontaqt, out now.
