More than a week ago I sat down with Museum Mouth’s Alex I Am Nothing and listened to it through one of my most intense cry fests to date. I trucked through it, jotting down my thoughts as snot flowed, relating too much to lines like “I hate that I can’t hate you.” I know, not a pretty picture – but in the end I couldn’t construct anything from those notes because of my distraught state. Today I’m better and actually smiling so let’s get to this indie punk record before the bad side of my emotions take over again.
Right away I identified with “Alex Impulse” and “Drool.” Well, seven days ago I did. Now they’re just songs I reverted back to having given the record another go. The lyrics were the best and full of regret – aren’t those always the best kinds of songs? Musically, they aren’t you’re run of the mill Coachella staple, or even a Warped Tour darling…they sit in between twiddling their thumbs and playing what feels right to them. Oh, and clever they are – songs in order like “Saltwater” and “Crocodile.” I see what you did there. Other than those first two I didn’t see myself jumping at any others, minus “Strange.”
With a smile I say, if you’re into bands like Cloud Nothings and Thermals then you have better get in the know and check out what these North Carolina boys are working with. You can get your hands on Museum Mouth’s Alex I Am Nothing, out now on Self Aware Records.
