Two hours of sleep is killing me right now but I will march on like a soldier on duty because it’s what I’m trained to do. My mission for this morning is clear – listen and review Only On Weekends’ Light Years and Heavy Lifting. I first met this group two years ago when they dropped Dig In and in that time they’ve kept on trucking at the same pace because as I used to tell my not-so-handy grandpa – if it’s not fucking broke, why the hell are you touching it?
The feminine touches are still intriguing on “The Prince of East 187th Street” and “Spondylosis,” which totally sounded like it was tossing in some Nirvana coverage at the start. Anyone else here a hear a pinch of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in there – just me? While the nasal-like tendencies that stuck out on the last record are still ever present with the very Blink 182 sounding “Sugarrump, This One’s for You” and the kind of comical, yet really personal “Branches.”
In the span of a couple years Only On Weekends have kept their initial brand of pop punk charm. They have that New Found Glory/Blink feel but add something to the mix with a constant female force like Jes around. So if you’re still digging I Call Fives or even Candy Hearts, and have yet to take in some Only On Weekends, make sure to do so now. Light Years and Heavy Lifting is out May 30.
