The Lovebirds: Breakup Shmakeup

the-lovebirds-breakup-shmakeup-reviewDo you know those women in life who are really deep and philosophical and often quote things you’ll never even begin to understand? That’s what The Lovebirds’ Breakup Shmakeup sounds like. It’s this intellectual pair of ladies who blend the ideas of love with a sense of Lilith Fair intertwined with singer songwriter elements that feel a little folky.

Some of the songs dragged on like “Boat Train” and “Be” so those weren’t high on my repetition list. The ones that stood out were the Joni Mitchell like “Fortunate Us,” the folk of “Crimson Love,” and the country of “Catch the Rain.” Most of the record plays like a coffee shop performance but you do get something a little different with “Whiplash” as it reminded me a bit of The Cranberries each time through. All in all though the gem of Breakup Shmakeup was “Love Through Our Music.” I think it really sets the overall tone of the record and really sets an anchor for the whole love theme heard throughout.

If you like soft spoken singers who pour their hearts out about love in a folk pop fashion, then you’ll be into what The Lovebirds are doing. So make sure to note that Breakup Shmakeup drops May 2nd…wait, that’s just right around the corner, so no excuses. Mark your calendar and check it.
