loners-society-king-city-sessions-reviewWhere’s the membership card for Loners Society? Is this a real thing, and if I join – am I no longer the loner I’ve come to be in the past two years? The lyrics one King City Sessions have nothing to do with being a hermit and I was a little bummed about that because that’s what who I am, but I was quickly brought back to their side thanks to one song and a whole lot of heart in the rest.

This band is a mixture of Country honesty, folk musicality and a rock mentality. You hear the truth in every word sung, especially in my favorite “LaGrange.” I knew nothing else would top this one for me thanks to it being the classic “I’m leaving this town to make it” storyline it had, and the telling lyric, “You can spend your whole life working to stay the same.” The folk was spread across the plains from “Jersey Devil” to “Pinstripes.” Note, you may want to yell “’Merica!” the whole time you listen to that baseball inspired tune. The rock came from the rebellion heard in my favorite and in the music of the most abrupt track, “Autumn Breeze.”

Loners Society did this album as a live session and the only way you’d know is by the clapping heard throughout – pretty impressive.  The record as a whole wasn’t one of my favorites, but “LaGrange” will be added to my list of nominees for best songs of 2014. So if you like musical truths in a folk rock format, check out King City Sessions out February 11th on Autumn + Colour.
