It’s like Diamond Youth cast a cold spell on in California today because their album, Shake, is matching my movements perfectly. Too cheap to turn on the heat, I’m stuck typing fast to keep warm. So while I do that to keep from my digits turning into icicles, let’s talk about that’s stuck somewhere between the Mad and Muse.
Right away I got an older vibe from this record with “Red Water” and “Can’t Shake the Feeling” reminded me of something Kevin and Bean from KROQ would spin. Although I must say that if the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland took to alternative music, he’d likely sound like what you’d hear in “Red Water” and later in the best of the bunch, “Don’t Feel Real.” That song was full of this offbeat imagery and ideas, and in the end was really mad yet delightful. The other one that stood out was “Maryland Ice Cream.” No, not just because I’m a fat kid and the title had a dessert. This was the one that pumped things up and added actual rock to Shake.
It’s still chilly, but typing that out helped a bit. I’m going to go put my hands under hot water and leave you with this – If you’re into bands like Muse, then you’ll want to check out Diamond Youth. They have the same way of delivering big moments in a subtle way thanks to dreamlike vocals. Shake’s out now, so warm up and check it out on Topshelf Records.
