Not everything is as bad as it seems, that’s what you can learn from Eskimo Callboy’s We Are The Mess. Yes, at first I was ready to run for the hills, lock myself in a cabin and wait until they ceased to exist but then I either got musical Stockholm syndrome or really started not to mind their hardcore infused electronic hot mess.
If Skrillex and Ke$ha had a baby and it was babysat by some rage filled band, I feel this would be it. You had the electronic sounds in “Ghost Of The Night,” party girl anthems with the dutifully titled “Party At The Horror House” and then the pissed off ways of “We Are The Mess.” The sound is likely something heard at Hot Topic when the high school staff controls the speakers – It’s true, as you get older, you can’t really understand what the hell the kids are into.
Then something happen towards the end because I thought “Voodoo circus” and “Broadway’s Gonna Kill Us” weren’t all that bad. I don’t know if the music got better or I was just used to it at that point, but if I had to revisit this record – those would be the only ones to rekindle anything with. Those and the acoustic gem “Never Let You Know.” This was a surprise and I took to it immediately.
If you’re a youngster and into raves but also like to head out to Warped Tour, you fall somewhere in the middle and so does Eskimo Callboy. They’ve embraced a multitude of styles to create music that will surely scare parents, teachers and anyone over the age of 25. If you’re into bands that are trancecore (really…everything’s got a core now?) like I See Stars, then check out We Are The Mess, out now.
