Right now I’m debating the importance of higher education – currently college is losing out due to the reality that I have a worthless degree and people I know who barely made it through the basics are kicking ass in the workforce. All those are the thoughts swirling around my head as I listen to Crash Island’s Strange Shores. What a wonderfully titled album for these confusing thoughts.
These hipster dance songs are a delight to those who like to move about to your indie music. “Across the Skyline” dragged on too long while “Let It Rain” was the triumphant winner thanks to the slight reggae vibe it had going on. I know, that was a surprise to me as well, or was it since the band clearly has some love for the island with their name and all, and the fact they dub their style “tropical indie.”
Then there was “Loved Ones” who set the tone with the “hipster dance.” It’s okay in its original form but if you can get your hands on the acoustic version, you’re in for a better time. It was a little like early Maroon 5.
The idea that I wasted four years and have barely made a dent in paying back my student loans is still looming as I wrap this up and try hard to let the acoustic version of “Loved Ones” take my mind off things. I’ll end with saying that I never knew “tropical indie” was a thing, and that Crash Islands may be the only band to do this, but hell – why not? Strange Shores is recommended for you indie fans who like to occasionally move about.
