There were many mental breakdowns, questionable decisions and musical high and low points – but we made it to 2014 in one piece! Pat yourself on the back while we strap in and take off for what is the last year before I hit that 10-year mark on the calendar that tells me I’ve been out of high school for a decade and have little to show. I may not have a husband, kids or a real career – but I have this blog, so I guess you can say I have that going for me. Who needs all that anyway when you have bands like The Yellow Dress to help you ease into the new year with their most-of-the-time infectious folk music on their third album, Faint Music // Ordinary Light? Not me, this music’s hit almost all the right spots.
I have to start off by saying the titles throughout this record were enough to get me to smile, especially “A Complete List of Fears Ages 5-28 (aprox).” I now want to write a personal blog post based on that alone. As for the music that came after the titles, it was just as good.
If folk isn’t your go to when picking music, you might not like “Everything of Whatever (for Joen),” but take my advice and give it a second chance…It’ll grow on you. Faint Music // Ordinary Light isn’t the kind of folk heard in that new Justin Timberlake movie that looks like a Mumford and Sons documentary, it has a bit more pep in its step. Take songs like the mouthful “FatherSunFunRun/Walk Towardson/Daniel Pennypacker” and the theater geek’s wet dream “Isaac Fitzgerald (bum bum bum)” for example.
Since it’s the start of the year, I found the messages in “Follow Through” and “Existential Heckle” to be fitting. The title speaks for one and the other, “Existential Heckle,” reassures us all that “it’s gonna be okay.” Remember that as you take on the third, fourth, fifth and so on days of 2014.
The Yellow Dress is for those who crave folk and like your music a little on the intellectual side with a pinch of fun. If that’s you, don’t be ashamed that you’re a little bit on the hipster side and put your Wes Anderson film on pause and check out this record. Faint Music // Ordinary Light is out January 4, so don’t forget – you can always set a reminder!
