Last night I went to bed with an icky feeling in my stomach. Come morning the feeling was gone, but I’m still feeling a little sluggish as I flip flopped on what to do with my time. I started with The Callas’ Am I Vertical? but then went on to something else. That didn’t work out so I headed back to where I started. The music’s odd and it fitted for those who definitely take risks when venturing into new musical plains.
I’m not a risk taker, I know what I like and that’s that. Hell, I hate peanut butter and jelly for lunch every day from 1st to 5th grade. If we’re sticking with food analogies, The Callas would be like a wild turkey sandwich tossed in the mix. This isn’t because their music’s out of control, oh no. Songs like “Lustlands” and “Anger” aren’t the least bit crazy, but “Lustland” did sound like a creepy circus from the turn of the century. Wild turkey in that it would be an unexpected turn of events, like a plot twist in a movie.
“Am I Vertical?” was like listening to a distant cousin of The Bravery, while at the same time reminding me of a Tarantino flick. Where’s the bloodshed? Another movie reminder came from “I Hate You But I Like You,” any fan of teen movies will get why. Basically you can hate someone so much that it leads you to not hating them, not even a little bit, not even at all.
There were a lot of times The Callas jogged a memory of something either from my life or a movie, but they never really did much to get placed on their own. This record is for those who like music that falls somewhere between darkened indie and slowed down alternative found in the early 90’s. Is that you? If you answered yes then take a risk and check out Am I Vertical?, out now.
