It’s that time of year in LA where we get one inch of rain and complain. Currently I’m in enough layers to make a bear feel jealous as I listen to Columbus’ Sad Songs and Sing-Alongs. I have to say there’s never been a truer title to a record, for there was a lot of sadness topped with song that make you want to join in on the fun.
It was almost split evenly down the middle with some songs being more punk than others, while the rest sat fragile with emotion. Songs like “Gutless” and “The Miles Between Us Are Just Too Far To Walk On My Own” proved to have balls with the punk side of Columbus prevailing proudly. Those were the base of the record, but I gravitated more towards the catchy stylings of “Coffee, Desks and Promises.” It was still punk, but with a less coarse approach. Of course after everything was said and done, “Going Under” winded up my favorite thanks to its acoustic start. Each song had a heart that’d been torn but was patched up by the musical endeavors of a bunch of punk kids who aren’t afraid to show they’re hurt.
It’s in no way warmer than when I started this and I might just hop on Twitter later to join my fellow Californians in ranting about the drizzle, but not before I pimp Columbus. If you’re music collection is make up with everything from punk to emo and have always wanted to blend the two, then it’s your lucky day because Sad Songs and Sing-Alongs is out now.
