Julia Easterlin: Vestiges

julia-easterlin-vestiges-reviewI did a singles thing recently and had no real luck, and that got me thinking about actual first dates. I’ve never really had a traditional one so this thought looms as I listen to Julia Easterlin’s Vestiges. While the end of her record wasn’t for me, I actually found myself really interested in the beginning. The music was a mix of trained pop vocals and pristine indie music; the love child of Regina Spektor and Sara Bareilles.

Once you hit the end with “Render” and “There There” I was just not feeling it. They dragged on and got weird. I’d assume it’s like the end of a first date and the thought to go in for a kiss lingers and you both stand there awkwardly making small talk. So let’s move past that moment and to the good stuff, the fun stuff – the actual date if we’re sticking with that analogy. “Go Straight Away” and “A Mild Response” are the exciting parts of the night, when you’re both having a good time and laughing. The energy of both is stunning, catchy and showcases the quirk in Julia’s voice.  Then you have “Unison” which could be likened to the “stimulating conversation” everyone says they want on a date. It’s heartfelt and serious, but not to the point that it leaves you awkwardly standing there.

If you like the ladies mentioned above, and are like me and need some company because your social calendar is bare, then check out Julia Easterlin’s indie pop. Be a gentleman or a lady and make a date with Vestiges, out now.
