There used to be a Hannah Montana poster in my college dorm room. Yes, I loved the show and have been a fan of Miley Cyrus’ for some time now and if you asked me what I thought about her VMA performance, I’d tell you I loved it – minus the eerie start where she strutted around the stage like a eight legged creep. So Bangerz has been on my mind since “We Can’t Stop” entered my life and became one of my favorite tracks of 2013. Sadly though I don’t think the album holds up to the lead singles and while she got some big names on it, those were the weakest links; goodbye.
No just kidding, come back. I wasn’t done. Collaborating with Britney Spears doesn’t impress me because it’s not longer 1999, but people were looking forward to “SMS (Bangerz)” and no, just no. Miley is trying too hard to be a mini Minaj at the start while Spears isn’t even bringing anything to the table. Speaking of trying too hard, that seems to be the case with every track that features someone else. It’s like she’s trying to prove she’s worthy of the hip hop cred on “My Darlin” featuring Future and “Love Money Party” with Big Sean. The only cameo on the record that made me hit “repeat” was Nelly on “4×4.”
The songs that were just Miley were way better off. Of course (possible) song of the year “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” have proven to be hits with parodies and covers galore. Other ones to mention are (as annoying as the title is) “#GETITRIGHT” and “Drive.” She’s not too overboard with things in those, and they come across as normal. Hopefully “Maybe You’re Right” earns its way to being a single because it deserves some grander attention.
She’s just being Miley right? That should be her continuous mantra as she goes on and remember that she’s able to pull things off on her own and if she wants to work with other artists, play it cool. When you try to hard it comes off as struggling and you fall flat. The tracks with Big Sean and Future may end up club hits, but thankfully I don’t head out to those establishments so I can just listen to the ones I like and pass on the rest. Bangerz is out October 4th and if you like artists like Ke$ha then this isn’t too far from that.
