Deer Widow: Deer Widow

deer-widow-reviewThis morning I woke up and had to write about Britney Spears’ new song “Work Bitch.” In doing so I read that she believed this was her “most personal” album to date. If her life revolved around robotic noises then she’d be right, so after listening to Deer Widow’s self-titled record, I thought – now this is what you call personal. Taking the bad with the good and translating it through song in a way that causes a connection; that’s personal. While I wasn’t onboard with every track vocally, Deer Widow achieved that personal touch sentiment throughout.

The reality of addiction stands tall in the leading track, “Bus Stops Moving,” while life lessons ring true in “The Path Forsaken” and “Get The Star Jimmy.” Those two remind us that if you wait, you’ll never get a second chance and the daunting fact – we expire. Again, the vocals weren’t my favorite, BUT I loved the storytelling of each track, especially “All My Exes Pay Their Taxes.” I will say that I did prefer the acoustic (bonus) versions of a few tracks over the other versions found at the start of Deer Widow. So I recommend you get your hands on those with the 10″ so you can have them all to yourself.

Deer Widow take life and lay it out as is in a scaled down way. Their style of indie plays like the music you’d find in the collections of American Football and The Promise Ring fans. If you like stories with your music, then check out Deer Widow, out September 17th on Save Your Generation Records.
