It’s almost the weekend and as I wander around my apartment trying not to forget anything for the two days I’ll be at my mom’s, I have Kenny Feinstein’s Loveless: Hurts To Love playing as high as it can so I can hear it throughout the landscape I call home. Kenny and I go back. He was one of the first artists to be really nice to me at my old job that’s such a distant memory now. Then he was fronting a bluegrass band that later added punk to the mix, today he still is but is stepping out on his own for just a second for this solo debut. You can still hear the bluegrass that runs through him, but it’s buried beneath the eerie remake of this My Bloody Valentine classic, Loveless.
Yes, this album is Kenny’s interpretation of that MBV album. He didn’t stray too far from the original concept, keeping the lyrics intact; he just flipped a switch on the musical aspect. He toned it down and gave it a more dreamscape affect. Every other song I’d write down that word, “dreamscape” due to the music containing this sort of fog like demeanor. As if you’d walk through a haze with songs like “I Only Said” and “Blown A Wish” playing, guiding you. Then when you woke, you’d find yourself on a backwoods porch in New Orleans with “To Here Knows When” playing over speakers you were unaware you had. That’s when you know his bluegrass background wasn’t abandoned. The same goes with “Only Shallow.”
It takes a lot of guts to remake an album you not only cherish, but others do as well. My hat’s off to my pal Kenny Feinstein for sticking to it. I swear we’ve been talking about this album for years! I hope that if I can catch him when he’s down in my neck of the woods, he’ll play my personal favorite off the record, “Loomer.” So as the final song fades, I’ll continue packing and let you know that Loveless: Hurts To Love is out September 17th.
