After waking from the most horrible nightmare of my life, I found myself discouraged. Editors hounding for things to be done “just right” and potential job offers being more or less slavery. While I weighed the options of my current state that is somewhere between unemployed and barely making enough to eat, I listened to Spose’s The Peter Sparker Mixtape and if you know me, you’d know that statement is hilarious. I’m far from being a master of hip hop, but a recent job reviewing up and comers in the genre has given me a keen ear for it. However, Spose isn’t some kid making beats on a laptop in Somewhere, USA. It’d easy to compare him to Eminem or MGK, but those dudes are mad about life and Spose doesn’t sound like an aggressive man on the hunt.
Spose dropped The Audacity! last April and over a year later, I’m feeling pretty much the same towards The Peter Sparker Mixtape. The mentions of random things from pop culture are still my favorite thing Spose adds to his music, from Bob Villa to Chris Brown’s pre-Grammy night incident. That’s why “Nineteen” was one of the songs that made an impression on me. “Fresh Raps,” did as well, but not because of the lyrics, but the sultry intro. Different almost always pays off.
While Spose defends who he is in tracks like “Salami” and “The King Of Maine,” he never does so in a manner that makes you feel he’s one of those arrogant hip hop guys who just repeat their name 345323 times on a track. We get it, we heard you the first time. I may’ve personally loved the songs mentioned right above, but thanks to some help from Chris Webby, I think “In Your Dreams” is the one everyone should check out regardless of preference.
For those who think all hip hop sounds the same, well you’re wrong. Every genre has those subgenres in them and Spose’s The Peter Sparker Mixtape falls, just like The Audacity! did, right with Asher Roth and Childish Gambino. It’s that hip hop that is made for those who just like to have fun while listening to their music without the mention of certain fowl words every other line…Minus Spose’s reference to pubes, but I found myself laughing at that. The Peter Sparker Mixtape is out June 10th for free on Preposterously Dank Entertainment, and you can’t beat that, can you?
