Remember that time I was going to wake up at 8am to write this review to get a head start on the day? Yeah, me either. I do remember hitting the “stfu” button on my phone as the alarm kept reminding me I was failing at life by sleeping and reading through hazy eyes that Bill Hader was leaving SNL, but that 8am wake up time…A distant memory now. But hey, at least I’m up now and rekindling my relationship with Wild Party. Last time we encountered them, it was through Lincoln as we chatted a little about their new album All Nighter. This time around All Nighter is the center of attention, much like a girl on her Sweet 16, if she was an indie pop record with a coastal attitude.
Wild Party opens the record strong with “When I Get Older.” It caused me to be reminded of an Aussie band I still can’t shake, Oceanics. Everything about this song was like a Hollister ad; a beach party filled with a youthful spirit. The energy of “Out Right” had me quietly singing along at 1am…When I should’ve been sleeping. Then quickly after that, All Nighter took a turn. “Take My Advice” added a dance feel, but I wasn’t moving along, and “Walkin” was just lukewarm after the first two went and stole all the spotlight.
I end this morning with Wild Party as I roll my eyes at this dude’s Facebook messages and hide my disdain with smiley face responses. The only thing I can do to wake up is pop on “When I Get Older” and let you know that if you’re a fan of Oceanics or Rooney, then you’ll like what you hear when you check out Wild Party. All Nighter is out May 21st.
