My head is flustered with numbers and logistics thanks to Backstreet Boys announcing dates. To those who judge, what have you loved that much for that long? Please save your glares of “really…you’re too old for that,” and let me be. As I try to figure all that out on top of budgeting my time for the eight other sites I contribute to, I’m listening to Radical Dads’ Rapid Reality. It’s a lot more indie rock than I’m used to and definitely not like anything I’d have in my personal collection, but there were at least a few songs I walked away with.
Rapid Reality is an album I’d slip on if I were hanging out in a café on Cahuenga in Hollywood, waiting for my latte after a day of rummaging through records at Amoeba. The fast paced indie would match the steps of the people passing by, on their way here and there. As “Mountain Town” begins, the start reminds me of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs but then gets into its own swing of things. Once I finish with the café, I hop on the bus to the beach with “Marine Layer” on repeat. That song screams SoCal with its laid back surfer mentality and mentions of dolphins and traffic. That should be Santa Monica’s slogan; “Dolphins & Traffic, We Got ‘Em.” The only other song to be a soundtrack to this daydream that spawned from listening to Rapid Reality is “Go 45.” Just like it closed the record, it helped wind down my day as well.
Would I listen to Radical Dads on my own time? Not really, they’re a little too indie rock for my taste. I’d say if you were into bands like Poor Spirits and Male Bonding, then you’d be more likely than to love what Radical Dads have going on. If this Coachella like band sounds like one you’d be into, then check out Rapid Reality, out May 21st.
