Arrows In Her/Gifts: Split

arrows-in-her-gifts-split-reviewAs I write this, another weekend is coming to an end and tomorrow I will have officially added two more writing tasks to my list. They do not pay, but they will help get my name out there. So as my mind wraps around everything I’ll have to do come Monday morning to not fall off course, I handle the first order of business, Arrows In Her & Gifts new Split. You never know where a Split is going to take you. You might like one half over the other, or none at all. When it came to this one though, I felt it was like the end of a good date (or so I’ve been told).

If you know the famous line Tie says to Cher in Clueless, that’s me. So I have no real knowledge of bedroom antics, but I’ve spent forever and a day watching RomComs, so bear with me. If this Split were someone you were about to embark on a romantic evening with after a long car ride listening to The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most, Arrows In Her would be the foreplay. Their dressed up Emo style is just enough, but it needs something more. “It Tired Me All the Same” could get things with its storytelling lyrics that turn more universal as it recounts, “pain is all you feel.”

After the foreplay then comes the main course, Gifts. What Gifts brings to the Split is a bigger force of energy that takes over. The mood of the record doesn’t change. It still has an Emo center, but the music Gifts backs up their lyrics is more alternative and therefor heavier all around. When “Strange” begins that lines like “show me your body” come across to you, that’s the moment worth waiting for.

An Emo Split we’re deeming “Splemo.” That is what you’ll get when you take Arrows In Her and Gifts Split for a ride.  When other splits can seem like two sides of the world, these two bands have managed to work well together to bring about a record that relies on one another to be a cohesive project. If you’re into bands like Dads and Old Gray, then check out this Split, out now on Meadowbrook Records.
