It’s hard to get a grasp on today with Anderson Cooper reporting the latest from Boston in the background and slowly tackling everything I want to do. Every day I wake up and say I’m going to cut back the sites I write for, every day I lie to myself about that. So in the middle of answering never ending emails, maintaining the site you’re reading this on and contributing to five other places on the interweb, I find a corner and listen to Bike Tuff’s Into Shore. I thought it’d just be a quick punk record, but it had more layers than I expected.
“Each Purling Note” gave off the impression that the rest of the record was going to play like a typical punk record; lots of attitude surrounded by course instrumentals. Then I listened on and here came songs like “Baby, You’re An Anarchist,” and I realized that they weren’t a one note type of band. Bike Tuff is able to communicate through varying styles of the genre at hand.
Most of the songs were glazed over and I didn’t really connect, but there were some that got into my head in the end. “Oak St. Market” reminded me of Warped Tour. Possibly because they mention summer, or that fact that it just had this audible aroma that made me think of those $2 eggrolls mixed with heat and the love on music that comes with Warped. “Black Book” was probably my favorite thanks to it being a little like Taking Back Sunday’s Tell All Your Friends at times. Listen to the beginning and let me know if you feel the same.
The news is still glued on Boston, as am I and the rest of the world, but for an hour I got to let myself go to a world where punk has variety thanks to Bike Tuff’s Into Shore. If you’ve found yourself listening to Louder Than Bombs and The Draft, then you should head towards Bike Tuff. Into Shore is out now.
